A Whimsical Woodland Celebration

I love the trend of “woodland” or “whimsical” themes… even “wonderland.”  There are so many creative ideas out there on the web.  I decided to follow a woodland whimsical theme for a recent family birthday! Although the weather didn’t quite cooperate for an outdoor setting, we were able to bring a bit of woodland whimsy inside.  Using mostly items already at home I was able to curate easy, table centerpieces.

For each table centerpiece, I used old books, tea cups and saucers, mercury glass votives, herbs planted in old tea cans (which I posted a few weeks ago) and mint julep cups for small silver vases.  I only had to purchase fresh flowers and the sheet moss.

Now that the party’s over, I plan to use the sheet moss in the fairy garden that my son, Finn, is designing.  Yes, it’s real moss, but it’s a bit of a mess to work with- nothing that a vacuum sweeper can’t fix though.

Each table was a little different since I used whatever books I thought looked best and the various tea cups I’ve collected over time.  The tea cup above is one of my favorites because it belonged to my grandmother.  I’m so grateful to my mom for gifting it to me.

I tried to keep the theme throughout the various elements of the party.  Including this yummy dessert table.  Here’s the recipe for the decadent chocolate cake you see above, as well as the tea cakes.  I picked up the adorable cupcakes from my favorite cupcake shop… you just can’t beat finding 12 different flavors of cupcakes.  With that many flavors everyone’s happy… unless you just don’t like cake and well, that’s just not right.  And don’t you just love the naked cake trend.

Woodland-Whimsical--naked-cake  This naked cake is layered with vanilla buttercream and strawberry filling.  It was so delicious….not a single crumb was left.
